IPL HAIR REDUCTION

What is IPL Hair Reduction

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair reduction is a popular method of long-term hair removal that uses broad-spectrum light to target and weaken hair follicles. Unlike laser hair removal, which uses a single wavelength of light, IPL emits multiple wavelengths, making it effective for larger areas of the body.

How It Works:

  1. Light Absorption – The IPL device emits pulses of light that are absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in hair.
  2. Heat Damage – This light energy is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle and slows down or prevents future growth.
  3. Hair Shedding – Over time, treated hair falls out, and regrowth becomes finer and lighter.

Benefits:

  • Gradual Hair Reduction – Noticeable results after multiple sessions.
  • Less Painful – Compared to waxing or some laser treatments.
  • Suitable for Large Areas – Can cover legs, arms, and back efficiently.
  • Cost-Effective – At-home IPL devices are available, reducing salon visits.

treatment explanation

IPL HAIR REDUCTION

IPL hair reduction treatment targets unwanted hair growth over the course of treatments. It uses non-invasive broad-spectrum light to treat unwanted hair on the face and body.  The melanin (pigment) in the hair absorbs the light, converting it into heat.   This heat damages the hair follicle, slowing down or preventing future hair growth. Using intense pulse light technology we aim to cause targeted destruction of hair follicles without causing thermal damage to the surrounding tissue.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Fitzpatrick skin type 6 (darker skin type), Grey, white, blonde or strawberry blonde hair, very fine hair, regardless of colour. Clients who are contraindicated to treatment, are not ideal for IPL hair reduction

Test Patch is required 24-48 hours prior to treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@skingoalsaesthetics.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair reduction is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target and weaken hair follicles, leading to reduced hair growth over time.

IPL significantly reduces hair growth, but it is not considered permanent. Maintenance sessions may be required to keep hair from growing back.

  •  Typically, 6-12 sessions are needed for optimal results, with sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart depending on the area being treated.

IPL works best on lighter skin tones with dark hair because the light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair. It is less effective on very light, gray, red, or white hair due to the lack of melanin.

Most patients describe the sensation as a mild snapping or rubber band-like feeling. Some discomfort is normal, but it is generally well-tolerated.  Some areas, like the bikini line, may be more sensitive.

  • Shave the area 24 hours before treatment (do not wax or pluck).
  • Avoid sun exposure or tanning for at least 2 weeks.
  • Do not use skincare products with retinol, acids, or harsh chemicals before treatment

  • Apply soothing moisturizer (like aloe vera) if needed.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and excessive sweating for 24-48 hours.
  • Wear SPF 30+ sunscreen to protect treated areas from sun damage.

You may start noticing reduced hair growth after 3-4 sessions, with full results typically visible after 6-12 sessions. Hair will grow back finer and lighter over time.

IPL can be risky for darker skin tones as the light may be absorbed by the skin rather than the hair, leading to burns or pigmentation issues. Some advanced IPL devices have skin tone sensors to adjust settings safely.

It is not recommended to use IPL during pregnancy, as there is limited research on its effects during this time.
